When thinking of a how to launch the journey of America: Now and Here we very quickly came to a consensus that we would enlist an artist whose multidisciplinary performances would set a great expectation for the path ahead.
For the kick-off of America: Now and Here on First Friday, May 6th, we are proud to present world renown visual artist and turntableist DJ Spooky. DJ Spooky is internationally known for weaving amazingly sophisticated visual landscapes together with complex narratives all while creating a soundtrack that will leave you wanting more.
Born in Washington, D.C. as Paul D. Miller, DJ Spooky is recognized internationally as an electronic and experimental hip hop musician and visual artist, incorporating classic film clips into his work and performing frequently at museums including the Guggenheim, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and just last month he hosted a short film program at the Hirshhorn Museum for the Washington Project for the Arts’ Experimental Media Series.
For First Friday, DJ Spooky will be performing on a stage erected outside of Mid-America Arts Alliance, and directly in front of the America: Now and Here gallery. Opening for DJ Spooky that evening will be DJ Sheppa (of Nomathematics).
For the uninitiated, above is a clip of DJ Spooky at the Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium in May 2010 with Cellist Claire Bryant and Violinist Sarah Whitney.
